HOKITIKA GORGE'OUS
Hokitika Gorge is a stunning natural attraction located about 33 kilometers inland from Hokitika, on the West Coast of New Zealand's South Island. It is renowned for its striking turquoise-blue waters, lush native bush, and dramatic rock formations.
Why is the Water Blue?
The vivid blue color of the water in Hokitika Gorge is due to the presence of rock flour, finely ground particles of rock that are suspended in the glacial water. These particles reflect sunlight, giving the water its brilliant blue hue. The gorge's water flows from the glaciers of the Southern Alps, contributing to its unique and captivating color.
How to Get There
1. From Hokitika:
- By Car: The easiest way to reach Hokitika Gorge is by car. The drive takes about 30-40 minutes. Head south on State Highway 6, then turn left onto Stafford Street and follow the signs for Kaniere Road. Continue on Kaniere Road, which turns into Woodstock-Rimu Road. Follow this road until you reach the signposted turnoff to Hokitika Gorge.
- Parking: There is a car park at the end of the road, from which it's a short walk to the viewing platforms and the swing bridge.
2. By Tour:
- There are local tour operators that offer guided trips to Hokitika Gorge, providing an informative and convenient way to visit.
What to Bring
- Comfortable Walking Shoes: The paths and tracks can be uneven, so good footwear is essential.
- Weather-Appropriate Clothing: The weather can change quickly, so bring layers and a waterproof jacket.
- Camera: The scenery is breathtaking, and you'll want to capture the stunning views.
- Water and Snacks: There are no facilities at the gorge, so bring your own refreshments.
- Insect Repellent: Sandflies can be a nuisance, so it's a good idea to have some repellent on hand.
- Sun Protection: Even on cloudy days, UV levels can be high, so bring sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses.
Additional Tips
- Best Time to Visit: Early morning or late afternoon can be less crowded and offer the best light for photography.
- Respect Nature: Stick to the paths and do not disturb the natural environment. Take all rubbish with you.
Enjoy your visit to Hokitika Gorge! It's a must-see destination that showcases the stunning natural beauty of New Zealand's West Coast.
